Three people have been confirmed dead, while several others who sustained serious injuries have been admitted at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral hospital in Kisumu. The three died on the spot after a sugarcane trailer belonging to Kibos sugar factory loss control and overturned at Kasagam flyover along the Kisumu-Nairobi highway crushing other two saloon vehicles that were parked along the road.
According to Kisumu based businessman Mr. Oscar Modoch (an eye witness ), the overloaded trailer lost control before ramming onto two saloon cars. “We are calling upon the county government of Kisumu to provide an alternative route for these sugarcane trucks because they are causing a lot of traffic jams within the town and frequent accidents due to overloading” he said.
He further noted that this was not the first accident being caused by the poorly maintained sugarcane trucks. “This is the third time we are witnessing an accidents on this flyover being caused by sugarcane trucks, something needs to be done”, he said.
Kisumu traffic police boss confrimed the incident and called upon motorists to be more careful while on road, “We have confirmed that three people have lost their lives, of which two were in the trailer and one was a pedestrian. The deceased bodies have been taken to Jaramogi Oginga Odinga morgue while those who sustained injuries are also receiving treatment in the same facility.” she said.
