Police officers and officials from the ministry of education in Kwale county have launched investigations on what might have led to a student from Stephen Kanja Secondary School in Shimba Hills commit suicide.

The student is said to have been punished and later sent on a suspension by one of the school teachers (name withheld). On arrival home at Majimboni village in Shimba hills, the student took a rope and hanged himself.

The incident caused overnight protests within the school on Thursday evening and early Friday morning which trigged the school to be indefinitely closed and student sent home.

A parent, Nick Waita said the overnight rampage prompted the school management to close the school for unknown period of time.

“After learning that their colleague committed suicide after he was sent home, the students went on rampage through out Thursday night,” he said.

The rioting students destroyed school property worth millions of shilling. Police have been deployed to guard the school even as investigations continue.
